The Faroe Islands women's handball team could rewrite history!
On Wednesday evening at 8 PM, the Faroe Islands women's handball team will face Lithuania at home in the first match of their World Championship qualification playoff. The winner of the tie will qualify for the World Championship—a massive opportunity for the Faroese team, as they have never participated in a World Championship before. The second leg will be held on Sunday, April 13.
Chances and Expectations
The Faroese national team has made remarkable progress in recent years. For the first time ever, they qualified for the 2024 European Championship, where they gained valuable experience competing against elite teams. During the tournament, they managed to earn a point against 2020 European Championship bronze medalist Croatia and ultimately finished in 17th place in what was their debut at a major international tournament.
Lithuania, on the other hand, has appeared at a World Championship before—but that was a long time ago, back in 1993, when they finished in 13th place. In recent years, they have not achieved significant success.
Given the momentum and development of the Faroese team, they have a realistic chance of gaining a strong advantage heading into Sunday’s second leg in Lithuania. As always, the Faroese players can count on their passionate and loyal fans—tonight, a sold-out crowd of 3,000 supporters will cheer them on at home.
Key Players
Jana Mittún – A player for Viborg HK in Denmark, she plays a key role in the national team despite her young age. She is considered the best Faroese player, and watching her play is a true delight. Before the 2024 European Championship, she said:
"This is a dream come true. It’s a huge milestone for me and for the whole team."
Pernille Brandenborg – The team captain, currently playing for København Håndbold in Denmark. Her experience and leadership are crucial for the team.
Maria Pálsdóttir Nólsoy – Also playing in Denmark, for HH Elite. She participated in the 2024 European Championship and is a talented young player who is earning more and more opportunities—and consistently making the most of them.
A Historic Opportunity
The Faroe Islands national team has an enormous source of motivation: no team from the Faroe Islands has ever qualified for a World Championship in any team sport. With a population of just 53,000, the Faroe Islands could become the smallest nation ever to reach a World Championship in any team sport.
The stakes are high, but the Faroese team is ready to write a new chapter in handball history and prove that they belong among the world’s best. A potential qualification would further boost the already immense popularity of handball on the islands.
