On Thursday, the draw for the 2026 Women's Handball European Championship qualifiers was held in Cluj-Napoca.
The Faroe Islands have been placed in a group with Montenegro, Portugal, and Iceland.
Below, we introduce the opponents of the Faroese national team.
The 2012 European Champion Montenegro has achieved remarkable results in recent years. They won the bronze medal at the 2022 European Championship, finished seventh at the 2023 World Championship, and secured eighth place at the 2024 continental tournament after defeating both Serbia and Romania in the group stage.
Montenegro's strength lies in its strong and aggressive defense.
The Icelandic women's handball team achieved a historic success at the 2024 European Championship by defeating Ukraine in the group stage. This was their first-ever victory in the history of the European Championships. Iceland ultimately finished in 16th place.
The Faroese and Icelandic teams also faced each other in the previous European Championship qualifiers. Iceland won both matches, securing a 28-23 victory in the Faroe Islands and a 24-20 win at home.
The Portuguese women's handball team has been steadily improving in recent years. They successfully qualified for the 2024 European Championship, which was a significant step forward for the team. While they did not advance beyond the group stage, they performed well against both Spain (30-24) and Poland, showcasing their development. Portugal, which finished 22nd at the 2024 European Championship, plays a dynamic attacking game, something the Faroe Islands must prepare for thoroughly.
The 2026 European Championship qualifiers present a significant challenge for the Faroe Islands women's handball team, as all three of their opponents have shown considerable progress in recent years. This qualifying group is tougher than the one for the 2024 tournament, making the matches against Iceland and Portugal crucial for advancing.
The Faroe Islands will begin their European Championship qualifying campaign with an away match against Iceland on October 15 or 16, followed by a home game against Montenegro on October 18 or 19.
The top two teams from each group, along with the four best third-placed teams, will qualify for the European Championship.
The tournament will take place from December 3 to 20, 2026, with five host nations: Poland, Romania, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Turkey.
